The Special Olympics in South Carolina has always thrived because of the dedication of our athletes, volunteers, coaches, families, and community supporters. But this year, the stakes are higher than ever.
With a reduction of nearly $600,000 in government funding anticipated in 2026, thousands of Special Olympics athletes across South Carolina are at risk of losing opportunities to participate in year-round training and competitions. These programs are more than just sports—they provide vital opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to build confidence, improve fitness, and experience the joy of teamwork and achievement.
We need our community now more than ever. And the first opportunity to make an impact is here: The 21st Annual Myrtle Beach Polar Plunge.
Why the Polar Plunge Matters
Every January, hundreds of brave souls gather at Sands Ocean Club to dive into the frigid Atlantic Ocean—not just for the thrill, but to raise essential funds that keep Special Olympics athletes on the playing fields.
In 2025, more than 600 plungers raised $151,000, making the Myrtle Beach Polar Plunge one of the top fundraising events in the state. But in light of the funding cuts, our 2026 plunge is more than just a tradition—it’s a mission.
This year, we are committed to raising at least $211,000, with the Polar Plunge taking the lead in helping to offset the funding shortfall. Our ultimate goal? To make up at least 10% of the statewide deficit—$60,000—from this single event.
The Strategy: How We’ll Get There
To meet this ambitious goal, we’re launching a three-part plan to rally our plungers, teams, schools, businesses, and supporters. Here’s how we can do it together:
1. Returning Plungers, Teams & Businesses Step Up
If everyone who participated last year raises just 10% more, we’ll add an additional $15,100 to the total. That brings us to $166,100.
2. Recruit New Plungers
We’re calling on 50 new plungers to join the fun in 2026. If each raises $211, that’s another $10,550. New goal: $176,650.
3. Team 211 Challenge
Our signature challenge for 2026! We’re forming Team 211—21 dedicated plungers who commit to raising $2,110 each. Together, they’ll contribute an incredible $44,310. This alone pushes us over the top, to $220,960.
With this strategy, not only will we meet our $211,000 goal—we’ll surpass it!
What’s at Stake
Special Olympics South Carolina serves more than 30,700 athletes across the state. These athletes train, compete, and grow thanks to the generosity of people like you. Losing funding doesn’t just mean fewer competitions; it means fewer chances for athletes to experience the thrill of victory, the camaraderie of teammates, and the personal growth that comes with participation.
For families, it means losing a community of support. For athletes, it means missing the opportunity to shine.
